JFK’s Inaugural Adress Thoughts

Filed under: Uncategorized — darthjjm @ 12:25 am and

JFK goes out of his way to address the people’s fears of the time. He addressthe possibility of nuclear attacks and the attack by communists. But he makes sure to set himself apart from the president before him. Eisenhower was a World War II general who’s policy throughout his term was that by amassing enough nuclear devices we can assure that if we are attacked the retaliation will be brutal enough to convince others that we should be avoided in the first place. Critic’s called this mutually assured destruction because essentially both countries would be left in ruins. JFK tries to disassociate himself from Eisenhower’s image and portray himself as a peace bringer. He talks about supporting peace more then anything in the speech. It gives the people the reassurance they needed during the Cold War.

Visual Texts

Filed under: Uncategorized — darthjjm @ 9:07 pm and

Audience:Mad Readers It’s aimed at people who already read Madmagazine. The ad was placed in their own magazine which means you already have to know a little bit about the magazine before you even see it. The ad also uses some of their humor in attempt to sell subscriptions.

Argument: To be funny The ad doesn’treally have an argument. It says “An important message from Mad’s director of Business and Development” It creates a serious tone that is then ruined by the ridiculous picture of the director in a viking costume. It then talks about vikings before jumping to the topic of magazine subscriptions.

Purpose:  To sell magazine subscriptions. The ad reads “Suscribe to Mad now!” the print is bold, a different color, and larger then the text before it. It also lists the price, a phone number you can call to order and a website you can visit.

Persona: A Viking The magazine creates a ridiculous scenario by looking at magazine subscriptions from a Viking’s point of view.

Just Asking Reading Responce

Filed under: Uncategorized — darthjjm @ 11:55 pm and

The main idea of the essay seems to be summed up in the first paragraph “what if we decided that a certain baseline vulnerability to terrorism is part of the price of the American idea?” The author then seems to back up that thought with the stats and quotes to support it. He never seems to favor security or liberty though leaving that part to the reader. He only asks questions trying to get to see politics in a different view. There isnt a single statement in the essay only questions. He’s not trying to persuade the reader to his viewpoint, he’s trying to get the reader to see with open eyes.

Purpose and its role with the Rhetoric Triangle

Filed under: Uncategorized — darthjjm @ 9:37 pm and

The first piece is one that was written by the BBC news. Its purpose is to inform the audience-the British people- of the princess’s death. Because it is a news group it provides bare facts and stays away from their own opinions.  It effective in its purpose listing the details of the crash while staying emotionally distant.

The second speaker is Queen Elizabeth reading a speech that was televised. Her purpose is that she feels obligated to give some kind of responseto the death of a member of the royal family even if the princess was divorced from Prince Charles. The speech is televised which means that the queen is reading to the who country. She is giving a speech and has to at least some mournful even if she isn’t since Diana was well liked. The piece comes off as an emotional heartfelt call to the country for unity.

The third speaker is Earl Spencer (her brother) reading a eulogy for Diana. He is reading this at her funeral which is being broadcast over radio and television so he is speaking not only to England but people in other countries as well.  The piece ready almost like a list of her good personality traits. He gives her an outstanding personality review as Diana is about to be laid to rest.

The fourth piece is an article from Wikipedia. the format of the site makes the writes impossible to identify since anyone can edit an article. However the purpose of the article is to inform the reader not only the details of the crash but other information regarding the crash as well. The crash is not the only subject written about there is also details of the controversy surrounding her death and the location of Diana’s resting place.  Because the piece was not written by professionals though the piece spends much more time on the controversy surrounding her death then anything else.

Developmental Patterns

Filed under: Uncategorized — darthjjm @ 12:40 am and

Overall the author uses the classical model of introduction, narration, confirmation, refutation, and conclusion. She makes a point and then backs it up with facts and statistics. Afterword she confronts the counterarguments with more facts and statistics.  But most of her paragraphs follow the exemplification pattern. They site fact after fact to prove the author’s point. She also constantly compares and contrasts the U.S. policys against the policys of other countries. The piece is an excellent example of combing multiple styles of organization and blending them to create a paper.

Poltical Cartoons

Filed under: Uncategorized — darthjjm @ 7:04 pm and

Subject: The rapid rate that NFL teams go through coaches.

Speaker: Drew Sheneman, an award winning cartoonist

Audience: The readers of the many major papers includingThe New York Times

Logos: The cartoon trys to show a lack of logic by making it look like the commonplace act of returing an item. However it gets ridiculous when you relize the player is returing his coach.

Pathos: The ridiculousness of returning a person is likened to the exchange of head coaches. The oddity is further emphasized by placing the football player in full game gear.

Ethos: The ability to place the right fired coach’s name with the correct team gives him some credibility.

Anaylisis: The author is trying to state that he thinks the system of firing coaches who dont do well is silly. He believes that the players are the ones who decide how well the team does and ultimately if the coach keeps his job or not.
